Scholarship program in the works

The Tucson Alumni Chapter plans to have a new scholarship program for the Beta Phi undergraduates up and running by early 2014.

Kevin Stombaugh, Beta Phi ‘91 has agreed to take the lead and is working closely with Lisle Payne ’64, Linn Wallace ’61, Jack McDuff ‘51 and other members of the Executive Committee to develop the program.

Stombaugh is a managing director of Grant Thornton, oversees the largest public finance practice of any certified public accountant firm in the nation. He also has experience as an underwriter for an investment bank and as a financial advisor to state and local governments specializing in tax-exempt bonds. He received his bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance from the University of Arizona.

"We are still in the early stages of development and are actively seeking input from a number of people," Stombaugh said.  "It is important that we get this right. We need to make sure we adhere to the mission statement and goals as set forth back when the Beta Phi Educational Foundation was established."

The foundation was created in 2003 for the purpose of supporting and contributing to the excellence in education and leadership skills and achievement for the Beta Phi Chapter.  Along with the mentoring program, the scholarship program will come under the foundation and will result in scholarship money being awarded to undergrads on a yearly basis.  Several things are yet to be determined such as committee members, selection criteria, award amounts and other policy matters.  A comprehensive plan will be presented to the Executive Committee at its next meeting for consideration and approval.

In addition to providing much-needed funds to the undergraduates, the program also will provide detailed instructions for how to apply on-line for numerous other sources of scholarship money available.

3 Sigma Chi's Bobcats

The Bobcats Senior Honorary only takes 13 seniors a year. Just six are men and three of those are Beta Phi Sigs.  Back Row from left- Forrest Gmitro, Matt Yalung (father and uncle are Beta Phis) and second from right is Aaron Whitelock.

This is just plain outstanding and indicative of the impact on the UA Leadership Community the chapter has.
